Howard Kurtz of the Washington Post has a whole story today about the trend toward sources agreeing to be interviewed by email only.
Kurtz quotes Jason Calcanis on the subject this way: "Calcanis says on his blog that 'journalists have been burning subjects for so long with paraphrased quotes, half quotes, and misquotes that I think a lot of folks (especially ones who don't need the press) are taking an email only interview policy.'"
Great piece on the state of reporter-interviewee relations. Your media relations tip: this is not a bad policy in some cases, particularly those involving a top executive who's in demand for interviews. It allows you to craft your message and keep an exact copy of what was said. But it has its limitations, mainly that if you are trying to influence the story, and the journalist, you'll be much more successful if you give him/her some of your time via phone or in person.
