One of the better online marketing deals has come to an end -- BusinessWire now charges a mandatory $75 surcharge for online distribution of your press release.
For years, online distribution was a free add-on. This wasn't a big deal for BusinessWire, because it made money repurposing your press release and posting it on other peoples' web sites. And it was a good deal for you, of course.
For the past couple of years, working mainly with Bay Area-based businesses, I've purchased the cheapest media distribution possible (usually Bay Area media) and gotten the benefit of the online distribution for no additional charge.
But BusinessWire has now gotten hip to the trick.
