Yah-oops!

Yahoo is apparently testing a new service called Yahoo Mash -- testing it internally that is. But then someone from Yahoo sent a log-in invitation to New York Times tech writer Brad Stone.

As Stone writes on an NY Times blog:
I followed the link to mash.yahoo.com, which bounced me to a username/password page, titled Yahoo Guesthouse, where my Yahoo login information did not work. I pointed this out to the Yahoo employee, and he replied cryptically over e-mail:

“Yeah, I jumped the gun on inviting you. Not yet open to the public… Soon…”

About an hour later, I got an e-mail from a senior Yahoo spokeswoman, reiterating that the invitation had been premature. “We are currently testing this alpha service internally with Yahoo employees, as we do with most of our services,” she said.

Go to mash.yahoo.com now and there's a different message:
Mash is currently an invitation-only beta service. The odds are good that one of your friends is in here already. Hit them up for an invite!

On this blog, we deal with the media relations aspect of this, so I'm not going to speculate about what Mash is.  At first I thought this might be a genuine gaffe. Now that I see this page, I'm thinking this is a planned leak designed to get people buzzing about this new service. Mission accomplished...
